THE SELF-ACCESS CENTRE
For English, French, German and Italian
What is self-access and how does it work?
Self-access means the ability to use additional teaching
materials on your own, outside class time, for language practice
and learning. Progress in language learning is a question of exposure
to the language, so self-access provides a further learning
opportunity by increasing the contact with the language.
What type of material can I use?
a) Computerized learning system - C.A.L.L.
In addition to other teaching advantages, C.A.L.L. is also fun.
It includes a variety of games and computer activities in English,
French, German and Italian. Programmes are easy to use and dont
require specialist knowledge of computers.
b) Language lab
A language lab with 12 work stations and specially chosen materials
for improving the students listening comprehension. Exercises include
a wide range of day-to-day activities, including: street indications,
airport announcements, booking a hotel room, and so on. They help
students feel at home in the language by picking up listening skills.
There are also over 100 Speak Up cassettes available, and a range
of business tapes will also be available shortly.
For radio fans, the self-access room notice-board gives information
about how to tune in to BBC for students.
c) Multimedia books on CD-ROM
Fun, different, and all in English. A multimedia book isnt just
for reading: you can look at it and listen to it, and this is particularly
useful for language learning where a combination of skills is required.
The Regency School has a selection of the best CR-ROMs currently
available, with subjects ranging from art, dinosaurs, ancient civilization,
cinema, anatomy, encyclopaedias and much more.
d) Video library
The Regency School has a number of excellent films on video, in
the original language (many are subtitled in English), which students
can borrow. For students interested in English literature, the video
library includes the biographies of major writers including Blake,
Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Dickens and others.
e) Reading at all levels
Simplified versions of novels and tales, at 6 different levels.
These books may be borrowed. Many of the books also have an audio
cassette. For advanced students original texts are also available,
in all genres.
f) International means of communication
The Regency School has a satellite dish for various programmes
in: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic etc.
There are also English, German, French, Spanish and Italian newspapers
and magazines available for students.
g) Internet
Want to surf the cyberspace in English or another language?
The Regency School has an internet link for students to use.
